The Kakehashi Project

The Kakehashi Project is a new commission from Collective Counterpoint for taiko soloist Kohtaro Yamakawa and composer Erika Oba, written for taiko and string orchestra. Premiering in May 2026, the work bridges Japanese drumming traditions with the sound world of Western classical strings, creating a vibrant space for cultural exchange and artistic discovery.

The new commission will explore various time periods crucial to the Japanese American experience such as Executive Order 9066, Civil Rights movement, and the Redress & Reparations movement.

The project’s title, Kakehashi (meaning “bridge”), reflects its purpose: to connect traditions, cultures, and communities through music. For Collective Counterpoint’s founding director Kana Luzmoor, the project is rooted in personal experience. As a high school violinist at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, Kana performed alongside legendary taiko master Eitetsu Hayashi in Isao Matsushita’s Hi-Ten-Yu. That performance illuminated the possibility of honoring both her Japanese American heritage and her Western classical training through music. Now, a decade later, The Kakehashi Project carries that vision forward by commissioning new work at the intersection of these traditions.

The Artists

Erika Oba – Composer
Erika Oba is a Japanese American composer, pianist, and flutist whose work often explores identity, heritage, and cross-cultural expression. Her music draws from jazz, classical, and traditional Japanese influences, making her an ideal voice to shape this commission.

Kohtaro Yamakawa – Taiko Soloist
Kohtaro Yamakawa is a taiko performer and disciple of legendary taiko master Eitetsu Hayashi. His artistry blends technical mastery with a deep respect for the cultural traditions of taiko, bringing both energy and authenticity to this collaboration.

Collective Counterpoint – Ensemble
As the commissioner and premiere ensemble, Collective Counterpoint provides the string orchestra foundation for this work, continuing its mission to expand the classical repertoire through new voices and cross-cultural collaboration.

Premiere and Festival

The world premiere of The Kakehashi Project will take place during Collective Counterpoint’s The Kakehashi Project Main Event in May 2026. Leading up to the premiere, the ensemble will host workshops and preview events, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process.

The Kakehashi Project is more than a performance — it’s a celebration of cultural identity and exchange. Alongside the premiere, Collective Counterpoint envisions community events such as artist panels, food and art markets, and opportunities for dialogue around Japanese and Japanese American cultural traditions. By commissioning new work and creating space for cultural celebration, the project affirms the importance of representation and connection in today’s music.
